The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) has a full schedule of summer, fall and winter events now open for registration.
MOFGA’s one-day Poultry Processing Workshop is on July 9. This workshop has a maximum of 15 attendees to enable one-on-one work with our instructors, Diane Schivera, MOFGA’s organic livestock specialist, and Everett Ottinger from MOFGA-certified organic Nettie Fox Farm.
Summer Orchard Care on June 27 with MOFGA’s organic orchardist, C.J. Walke, and Bud Grafting on August 8 with Seth Yentes of MOFGA-certified organic North Branch Farm.
A three-day Nose-to-Tail Pork Processing Workshop will take place October 10 to 12 during Columbus Day weekend. This workshop covers all aspects of raising, humanely slaughtering and processing pigs. Eric Rector and his crew of three local farmers will cover all steps of this process and detail their techniques.
November 19 to 22 is MOFGA’s low-impact forestry (LIF) weekend, including an Introduction to LIF Workshop and our full LIF Course featuring separate mechanical and draft-animal-powered tracks.
A Chainsaw Safety Class will run on November 20 to 21 during the LIF weekend. This course covers the basics of saw mechanics, operation, maintenance and safety, and provides an opportunity to learn and practice safe felling techniques.
A Kitchen Licensing Workshop on December 2 is designed for farmers and others interested in home-food processing for resale.
Other events include the Common Ground Country Fair, September 25 to 27 (no registration required), Great Maine Apple Day, October 18 (no registration required) and Farmer to Farmer Conference, November 6 to 8 (registration will open in August).
