Over the last few months I’ve taken several online certification courses. As I was researching material for my column this month, I ran across an online cattle health course from the National Animal Disease Information Service (NADIS) in the United Kingdom.
I’m sure that there are some similar courses and if there are, please share. For this column, I thought it would be fun and instructive to go through a few of the health modules. However, instead of reviewing the material, we will start with the quiz. As you search for the answer, hopefully this will result in retaining more information.
As calving season is just around the corner, there is a three-part module on calving. We’ll go over the first two: Calving Basics and Calving Difficulties (Dystocia):
For beef producers who have been through five or more calving seasons, many have encountered these situations. If not, you will. These modules are a good way to refresh your memory on how to handle normal and abnormal calving conditions. Of course, whenever you have any doubt, contact your veterinarian.
At the NADIS site there are many health conditions listed with resource material followed by a quiz. With the winter in full force, take some time to look over the modules and go back to school.
