News from Southern Tier Sheep & Wool Growers

3/19/2013

The Southern Tier Sheep & Wool Growers held their annual meeting January 7, 2013, at the Norwich Cornell Cooperative Extension Office. The date was set for the 2013 wool pool, which will be held on Friday, September 6, and Saturday, September 7; this is a slight change from previous years. The pool will be held at the Otsego County Fairgrounds in Morris, N.Y.

As the shearing season starts, please remember to have your sheep penned in a dry location. It is best to keep the wool clean before and after shearing; keep it relatively free of straw, baling twine, and polyester. Try not to throw hay over the backs of your sheep when feeding, as this can cause uncleanness of the wool.

Wool has many uses, both traditional and nontraditional. You can save it for the wool pool, give it to a local spinner or use it for insulation around your farm; whatever happens, please don't throw your wool away. Please contact Sue Smith at 607-293-8810 for more information.
