Competition was fierce at a recent regional dairy judging event, but Vermont 4-H'ers proved that they could hold their own against the very best 4-H dairy judging teams in New England.
Two teams, representing University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H, participated in dairy judging at Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, Mass., September 15. The Vermont A Team included Kristen Breau, Vernon; Brian McGarry and Kathryn Wright, both from Enosburg; and Tiffany Tracey, Vergennes. These individuals were the high overall scorers in the Vermont 4-H dairy judging contest in 2011 and first competed at Eastern States last fall.
Vermont B Team members were Brooke Aicher, Shelburne; Britney Hill, Bristol; Sara Ingwersen, Addison; and Cassie Westcom, Enosburg. The team is comprised of the top winners of the 2012 state dairy judging competition this past June. Alternates selected for this team were Ben Maille, Shelburne, and Sara Moye, Vernon, although neither competed at Eastern States in dairy judging this year.
While all six New England states had at least one individual who ranked in the top 10 for highest overall individual scorers in the contest, Vermont claimed four of those spots. Kathryn Wright placed second; Tiffany Tracey, third; Sara Ingwersen, eighth; and Britney Hill, tenth.
Vermont also outperformed the other states in individual oral reasons with five winners among the 10 highest scorers, more than any other state. Kathryn Wright took first place; Britney Hill, third; Brian McGarry, seventh; Sara Ingwersen, eighth; and Kristen Breau, tenth.
Vermont exhibitors who finished in the top 15 in judging classes, by breed, were as follows:
Ayrshire: Kathryn Wright, sixth; Tiffany Tracey, seventh.
Brown Swiss: Kathryn Wright, first; Sara Ingwersen, fourth; Tiffany Tracey, eighth.
Guernsey: Kathryn Wright, fifth; Britney Hill, ninth; Brooke Aicher, tenth; Tiffany Tracey, eleventh.
Holstein: Kathryn Wright, first; Tiffany Tracey, fourth; Brian McGarry, sixth; Brooke Aicher, twelfth.
Jersey: Britney Hill, first; Tiffany Tracey, fifth; Brian McGarry, eleventh; Kristen Breau, twelfth.
Milking Shorthorn: Sara Ingwersen, second; Britney Hill, sixth; Brian McGarry, eleventh.
The scores of all four members of each team were combined to determine team rankings. The Vermont A Team came in first overall in the competition and first in oral reasons, beating New Hampshire's A Team by only three points in each of the contests. They also ranked first in judging Ayrshires and Holsteins and second in Brown Swiss. The Vermont B Team came in sixth overall and third in reasons.
