Harrisburg - The Center for Dairy Excellence and the S. Dale High Center for Family Business will host a workshop on Dairy Farm Family Transition Planning on Tuesday, November 20, at the Central Penn Conference Center in Summerdale, Pa. Held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., the workshop is designed to better equip participants to work through the complex steps of transferring ownership and management of a dairy business to the next generation.
The cost to register for the event is $50 per family, with up to five family members welcome to attend. Farms are encouraged to include their key family decision makers in the workshop. In addition, one nonfamily trusted advisor or planning team facilitator is required to attend the workshop with the family unit.
Mike McGrann, executive director of the S. Dale High Center for Family Business at Elizabethtown College, will facilitate the daylong workshop, which will address eight areas critical to family business transitioning. As executive director, McGrann has conducted seminars for family businesses, executive education programs, and personalized workshops for family groups around the world. He teaches classes on entrepreneurship, family enterprising and new venture creation. His background also includes degrees from Cornell University, The Wharton School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania.
During the workshop, McGrann will address issues of empowerment, the difference between fair versus equal, and differing visions for the family business. Designed to be a hands-on workshop, the day will include time for participants to work with their succession planning facilitator to address those issues most critical to their individual situation and identify the core values most important to their business.
A panel discussion will also be part of the workshop, addressing legal, financial and accounting issues related to succession planning. Respected experts in each of these three critical areas will address the best management practices necessary to ensure a successful transition.
